Hated it at first! LOVE it now  5

When I first became a Vegetarian several years ago, I bought this book thinking it was going to just tell me everything I wanted to know and give me the recipes and menus to boot. NOPE... I put it high up on the shelve and didn't give it another thought for awhile. I fell off the vegan band wagon and joined meat eaters again. When went back to vegan I pulled this book out and I finally really read it and its wonderful. It has all the information you need to know how to plan your own diet and where to get all the vitamins and minerals you need. Also this book has on several times saved my butt on heated arguments over how much protein one needs and where to get calcium other than milk and yogurt. Plus the dads sneaky pudding is worth its weight in gold as one of the two recipes in the whole book. This is the bible of the vegan diet. Its a great reference book that comes in handy as a reminder of keeping yourself healthy and your diet nutritious.

  Nothing Better!  5

I swear I don't think there's a better resource out there if you are considering a plant-based diet. I am not a vegan right now (just a vegetarian), and I don't think I will be anytime soon, but this book is still very helpful. If you're looking for a great read with tons of information, then this is the perfect book. Highly recommended!

Is this their first vegan book too?  1

After reading this book, I was expecting it to be panned and was surprised by the positive ratings. Regardless, this is not good. It is overly-technical, stuffy and uninspiring. I didn't get the impressions that the authors were actually vegan but were reporting on their academic subject. It could have been written about proper nutrition for rats. There are long and confusing reductionist explanations about specific nutrients and references to contradicting studies. Its mostly about trees and not much about the forest - not a good place to start.
I am going to get another book on the topic. Wish me luck.

What it Lacks in Entertainment Value, it Recoups in Info  5

This book won't win any prizes for its entertainment value, but the research-heavy, information-laden pages make it an invaluable reference for both newbies and practicing vegans/vegetarians.

Becoming Vegan broaches a variety of important topics, from the history of vegetarianism to adequate nutrition, from positive health impact to cautions such as potenial deficiencies and eating disorders.

Excellent information. Sage advice. Great outlook without being overly idealistic.

  LOVE IT!!!  5

I have been a vegan for 2 months now. I am an information hound, and after exhausting many online resources this is the first printed book that I purchased. It cleared up many cloudy areas for me. There are many different chapters which pertain to certain groups of people and dietary needs at different stages of life. I found the information for athletes helpful as I am a personal trainer and an avid exercise enthusiast. I recommend this book as a foundation for anyone currently practicing or considering a vegan diet lifestyle.
